Eve reaches her 10th day
Tory whined with jealousy the first couple days but has been good since.
I have fed her extra treats to create a positive association with the baby's arrival.
Mom and baby have a morning nap after a relatively smooth night.
Not every moment can be joyous.
Babies and martinis, the finer things in life.

baby's first Skype session
Eve skyped with her cousin Eli this evening. Only problem was that Eve slept the whole time. Eli, on the other hand, was bouncing around like a hyperactive frog.
blogging addiction?
Our friend Sarah Gollust told me today about her friend, who started a blog during pregnancy and then became an absolute blogging junkie after the baby was born. Multiple posts almost every day, apparently...I doubt that will happen to me, though.
Tarheels update
They're doing OK so far.
Eve slept peacefully through a 97-75 win over Rutgers last night. She would have liked to see a better effort on defense, however.

Solstice baby
As many of our friends and family have noted, Eve was born on the winter solstice. My friend Randy Hulett wrote this as part of his reply to our email announcement:
"I'm sure she's making your days brighter, and probably longer too."

Evil-yna here for a while?
Last night was tough in the same way that the previous night was, maybe even more so. Eve cried a lot in between 2-3 hour stretches of sleeping. Her needs are no longer as simple as filling her up and putting her down to sleep. More specifically, she only seems to be consoled by being latched to mom's breast, even when she doesn't appear to be hungry. So, in summary, there are only 3 acceptable states of the world for her right now --
1) sleeping;
2) feeding;
3) latched to breast but not feeding.
I can do little to console her, even with a bottle of breast milk (Martha has started pumping a little). Being powerless to stop my own child's crying is a terrible feeling! At the same time, this gives me a new appreciation for the unique mother-child bond, which is touching to see between Martha and Eve. For now I will just have to focus on other ways to make Eve feel loved and to help Martha with the household.
Eve's fussiness may be related to her small size and early arrival. Her stomach is probably small and her digestive system may not be as developed as a typical newborn. Daniel's sister Sarah and her husband David had similar issues with their little one, Eli, who was born six months ago at 6.5 lbs (and dropped to 6 lbs before rebounding strongly).
We'll keep experimenting with ways to make Eve the happiest little baby in the universe (on our block she's the only baby, so let's expand our ambitions!).

Eve's first Tarheel games
Today Eve is going to watch the UNC football team play in a bowl game (some obscure bowl because they tanked 2 of their last 3 games, but still, their first bowl game in years).
Tomorrow Eve will watch the undisputed #1 college basketball team play versus Rutgers. It will be interesting to see who her favorite player is. Tyler Hansbrough would be the obvious pick, for his tenacity and country boy good looks, but my money is on Tywon Lawson. Small, speedy, and strong.
Eve's predictions for both games: PAIN.

Bailey women

Eve looks a lot like Martha did at the same age, at least from this angle. And Martha at age 20 looked a lot like Anne in this photo (at age 20). Of course, now Martha is 34, so we'll have to dig up a photo of Anne at that grand old age in order to keep the comparisons going.
(thanks for Oma E for forwarding this photo, which was used in the wedding slide show, I think)
Evil-yna
Last night we met Evil-yna. She looks like Eve but is surely not the same baby. She has a fit before, during, and after each feeding, and sleep is not high on her priorities. When Evil-yna finally had a poop at the end of the night, Eve returned. So we suspect that Evil-yna = constipated Eve. I am now going to google "baby laxatives."

p.s.
Martha would like to add that she is proud of herself ("I'm a rock star") for nursing Eve in a sling while walking around the store.
successful trip
Eve had a good time at Red Robin and Babies 'R Us. The trip to Babies 'R Us must have been especially satisfying. She probably thought of herself as a long lost goddess returning to the altar where so much time and (monetary) sacrifice has been spent. We substituted a quick stop at Kroger instead of Sam's Club, because the goddess was crying in the backseat.
Eve's first public appearance
We're heading to Red Robin, Sam's Club, and Babies 'R Us. Wish us luck!
first visit to pediatrician
We had our first visit to the pediatrician, and all went well. Eve checked out fine, and we got good tips for breastfeeding, burping, cleaning, and all those fun things. We like our pediatrician. She answered all our questions very well and wasn't pushy with her recommendations. Most importantly she seemed sharp and caring. Martha was thrilled to get out of the house for a bit.
