I guess that human evolution could have gone in one of two directions: 1) baby has self-preservation instincts; 2) parents have baby-preservation instincts. The following casts doubt on #1.

Philly
We were in Philly this past weekend to visit my parents at their new downtown place. We had a great time. Eve had her first visit to an aquarium (in Camden, just across the Delaware River), and was intrigued by its inhabitants. We also ate at an excellent French restaurant, Bibou, and had a chance to meet up with our friends Ezra and Sarah. Martha is now in California on a whirlwind tour giving seminars at three places, while Eve and I recover from the trip at home. I will post more pictures from our trip later this week.

latest tricks
more self-infatuation
In Eve's world there is nothing more exciting than watching a video of herself.

waking
(In my defense, I knew she was awake because I heard her making sounds. Though after seeing her cower in the video, I feel bad about turning on the lights suddenly.)

Eve and the Seven Dwarves?
My sister Nina and her husband Josh just found out that their twins (due in February/March) are both boys. That means that so far all six of Eve's cousins are boys. If someone can squeeze out another boy before Halloween 2010 they can all dress up as Eve and the Seven Dwarves.

postnap surveillance
Lately we've been finding Eve on the outlook after getting up from her naps. She seems to be able to entertain herself for 30 minutes or more by pulling herself up and surveying her kingdom. It's a big step up from crying helplessly in a lying position.

at the Y
This footage was cut short when the lifeguard informed me that cameras are not allowed on the pool deck due to privacy laws (if I heard him correctly). My best guess on the logic behind this is that people want to be able to go to the pool without worrying that pictures of them in bathing suits will end up circulating at their the office. Or something like that? For now I am filing this rule under the "people are crazy" category.
