scary sharp

It is dawning on us that Eve is probably sharper than either of us. As in, she is a more astute observer and retainer of events, people, and information.  For example, a package arrived today and Eve said, "It's a present for me. It's my purple shoes." Apparently Martha mentioned once last week that she was ordering purple shoes.  Every day, it seems like, Eve will recall something, make an observation, or use new words and grammar that makes us stop and reevaluate who this little person is.

I guess this is an inevitable passing of the baton between generations, but we never thought it would happen so quickly. Well, we are still wiser, and that will never change, right?  The purple shoes are really cool, by the way.

baby Ella at 3 months (pictures from a month ago)

sisters, 4 months on

Although it may not be apparent in the photos below, the sisters are forming an increasingly tight bond.  Ella is pleased and attentive whenever Eve is nearby (even when Eve is chirping in her face, which is often the case).  For her part, Eve is always happy to see "baby Ella!"  I think Eve realizes that Ella has become most devoted follower.  And there is nothing Eve likes more than adoring attention.

a view we'll miss

We're heading back to Michigan in two weeks. It's been a good year in Berkeley.  We'll miss being near my family, of course, and we'll also miss the views from the Berkeley hills, especially at dusk.

We've been preparing Eve for the transition by giving her things to look forward to in Michigan. When we tell her that she'll be starting school (daycare/preschool) in Michigan, she immediately says, "Can we?"  We've also promised her a new bike in Michigan, which she asks about frequently. She seems even more excited about getting a bike helmet, actually.

one to tide you over, adoring fans

Here's a quick photo from our trip to Monterey a few weeks ago...I have a bunch of photos on backlog, and hope to post them soon.
